Van Nuys

In 1871 Van Nuys was originally located on 60,000 acres of land owned by Isaac Newton Van Nuys.  The town was founded in 1911, and named for its original landowner.  It was annexed by Los Angeles in 1915, after completion of the Los Angeles Aqueduct, providing it with the water required for further growth.  Van Nuys was the first new stop on the San Fernando Line of L.A’s iconic Pacific Electric Railway red cars system, which boosted its early land sales and success.  The center of the community, Van Nuys became the San Fernando Valley’s satellite of the Los Angeles municipal civic center.  With the 1932 Art Deco Valley Municipal Building and City Hall, a visual landmark and a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument as the cornerstone of the present day Government Center complex of government services buildings. Don Drysdale, Hall of Fame baseball player, Marilyn Monroe, Robert Redford, Jane Russell and Natalie Wood have all called Van Nuys home.  Much of the film, American Graffiti was filmed in Van Nuys.

Home to the retired space shuttle Endeavour!  An extensive science museum located near the University of Southern California campus in LA. This museum charges for some traveling exhibits but admission to the permanent exhibits is free of charge.
LaBrea Tar Pits

A pre-historic tar pit located in the center of a booming metropolis is a strange site to behold, which is probably why the La Brea Tar Pits attracts residents as well as tourists. Visitors to the tar pits can see fossilized remains of animals that have been excavated from the site, and learn more about the ancient history of the Los Angeles area.
