Builders Warm the Hearts of Buyers With Gifts

California Home Builders give tote bags and other goodies like a handyman voucher and first aid kits to new buyers.Good marketing is an obvious part of making sales. But why give something extra to a homebuyer who is already spending money with you anyway?

“It reinforces the relationship between the homeowner and City Ventures,” answers City Ventures sales manager Natasha Zabaneh.

City Ventures, based out of San Francisco and Newport Beach, Calif., gives stainless steel cookware to their homebuyers as a housewarming gift. This cookware is compatible with the GE PHP900D 30-inch induction cooktop that come as standard in their new homes.


 

Normally $1,800 suggested retail price, the cooktop has a pan presence sensor that shuts the element off when not in use. The elements beneath the cooking surface produce a magnetic field that causes the electrons in the pan to vibrate and produce heat. The cooking surface itself does not heat. Heat cannot be generated until a pan is placed on the cooking surface.

 

The pan detection sensors are activated by an On/Off pad. If a pan is removed or moved to off-center from the cooking ring, the control will flash “F”along with the power setting. After 30 seconds, the element will be deactivated and displays will turn off. If the pan is placed back on the zone within 30 seconds, the flashing will stop and cooking will resume.

Magnetic induction cooking requires the use of cookware made of ferrous metals. GE recommends using round cookware with heavier, flat bottoms large enough to cover the cooking elements. The cookware gifted by City Ventures is specifically identified by the manufacturer, T-fal, for use with induction cooktops.

The cookware also ties into a cooking demonstration event City Ventures hosts for the homeowners during their escrow process.

“They are always grateful and excited—people love their kitchens,” Zabaneh says.

California Home Builders has been providing its customers with housewarming gifts since 2004 to facilitate the moving process and make the homeowners feel comfortable. The company provides a 4 hour handyman voucher for all homeowners, in addition to tote bags containing a car emergency kit as well as a first aid kit. The homeowners can use the handyman voucher gift for services such as unpacking, hanging pictures, installing ceiling fans, assembling furniture, etc. at the request and convenience of the owner. The gift is valued over $500.

“California Home Builders likes to provide housewarming and essential gifts to new buyers to express our appreciation for their support of our company and for entrusting us with one of the most important decisions in their lives,” says Emilie Kaplan, sales and marketing administration assistant at California Home Builders.

“We wouldn’t be who we are today without our homebuyers and we want them to know that.”

California Home Builders specializes in developing and building residential communities, multi-family projects and luxury custom homes in Los Angeles County.

“Most of the new owners are surprised that they are getting something from us. They expect the house to be immaculate and the customer service to help them through any issue yet they don’t expect a no-strings attached gift.” Kaplan says. “We put a lot of thought and effort in choosing the right gifts that will actually make a difference, be meaningful and not only be forgotten in a closet or sit on a shelf.”

California Home Builders is known to give tote bags, Maglites, first aid kits, car emergency kits and more to new buyers.We’ve all heard about the drought in California, Title 24 mandates and the state’s overall mission to become greener. Another component of that is the ever-expanding bag ban. Like many other counties in California and various other jurisdictions across the United States, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has adopted a ban on single use plastic bags at stores. Stores are also to charge 10 cents for each paper bag given to customers. The intent of the ordinance is to promote the use of reusable bags to reduce the negative economic and environmental impacts associated with single use bags.

The tote bags help homeowners stay in compliance with the ban and give a positive connotation toward the business when the buyers take home their groceries. They also help deliver the other gifts.

And then there are homebuilders who are really embracing the tech-craving trend, like Frankel, Nexus EnergyHomes and Copperleaf, who give iPads. These gifts are especially handy as they control the home’s automation system. In Copperleaf’s case, they give the homebuyers an iPad before the house is finished, allowing them to track the building process and envision aspects of the home they’d like to be controlled by the Crestron home automation system.


A number of homebuilders give Kohler’s Moxie Showerheads to homebuyers. These aren’t your run of the mill showerheads. This Bluetooth-enabled device brings music into the shower through an integrated wireless speaker that’s both rechargeable and removable.


“We’re seeing a growing demand for music in the bathroom,” says Kohler performance showering product manager Leslie Bronson.

DR Horton has given away over 1,200 Moxie showerheads nationally in the past year.

The Moxie showerhead syncs with any Bluetooth-enabled device—smartphones and mp3 players—and streams music, news or other audio directly into the shower. The speaker pod can also be relocated for enjoyment up to 32 feet away.

“Smartphones are transforming the way people access music. Half of all smartphone users stream music directly from their devices. The Moxie showerhead is the first of its kind to combine the delivery of water and music,” Bronson says. “It’s like having your own mobile DJ.”

The showerhead has 60 angled nozzles. Depending on the model, it has a flow rate of 2.5 gallons per minute or 2 gallons per minute. Kohler also just introduced its new rainhead line that has 80 angled nozzles.

Housewarming gifts are a nice touch to the home purchasing experience. It makes buyers remember you. And bonus points if you can get your company’s logo on the gift. It will truly be the gift that keeps on giving for the buyer and the builder.
